The Power Of Resilience

We are in the midst of something we may not have ever experienced before. Many have temporarily lost the things we once took for granted. For some, this is permanent.

While spending time browsing social media, I have observed many references to time. Some people are learning languages to overcome boredom, others are using exercise as a coping mechanism. Some are even using this time to get back into following a ketogenic diet.

There have been quotes thrown around like this: “You can either come out of isolation 20lbs lighter, or 20 lbs heavier… It’s your choice…”

While this mindset may help, it’s not the solution. By masking one problem with another just adds disappointment.

How many of those people do you think will come out the other side of this with a brand new set of skills they have taught themselves in isolation? Some, maybe.

Instead, I propose a better solution. Building resilience

Resilience can take many forms, and often the ones who have cultivated a strong sense of resilience are better prepared for the unknown.

This might be resilience in how we handle being let go from a job.

It could be resilience in the foods we choose or the immune system we build.

It could also be in the foods we chose not to eat, or the food we are unable to access.

It could be how we prepare ourselves and our family for the unknown.

Reliance can take many forms, but we must have the creativity push through.

Depression is the inability to construct the future, but anxiety is an inability to see things for what they are. By using resilience, we can be prepared for anything.

The need to construct a future, or to feel thrown around by circumstances that are out of our control diminish with our ability to react and respond by using resilience.

How Can You Build Resilience?

Firstly, thank you to all those who are on the front lines of our health care system and who cannot stay at home. Your courage and resilience are unprecedented, and we thank you.

If you are isolating at home, I would suggest taking each day as it comes, each minute as it comes, and enjoying every last second of it. Why waste this precious time by filling it with aimless scrolling, or thinking about all the things we “could” achieve.

Once you learn to appreciate the time you have, nothing can be taken away from you.

Don’t fall victim to those who need to fill time pursuing tasks that they have put off because they have been “too busy”. They too will learn the art of resilience.

In the spirit of taking our lifestyle back to basics, I propose a challenge. This challenge is all about the humble egg.
